Overview |
This activity aims at improving the self-esteem and self-confidence of young people with the use of group music. Playing instruments in a group session pushes people to interact with each other and encourages socialization and cooperation. Being part of a team and having the opportunity to play instruments can be useful to improve the self-esteem of participants. |
Learning Objectives |
To improve the self-esteem and self-confidence of the participants. |
Materials |
Musical instruments easy to play: claves, tambourines, drums, guitar, piano, ukelele, egg shakers etc. |
Preparation |
The trainer should provide all the musical instruments needed to carry out the activity. The chosen venue should be spacious enough for all the participants and equipped with chairs and tables if needed. |
Implementation |
- The trainer asks the participants to choose the instrument they like the most or the one they think they would be able to play best.
- The trainer and the participants choose a simple song to be played (it can be a well-known song or a song created specifically for the activity), or a short melody. The trainer assigns to each participant a small riff or a rhythm that they should play.
- The participants play the riffs or rhythms assigned to them all together.
- The trainer asks each participant to switch their instrument with another one and a second session of group music will be performed (the group can choose to play another song or melody or the same song as the previous session).

Debriefing and evaluation |
The trainer asks each participant how they feel after the session and what are their impressions. It can be asked also if they liked to switch the instrument they first chose or if they felt more insecure when they were asked to play an instrument with which they felt less confident. |
